A Cigarette saved his life...

I never thought I would write those words, "A Cigarette save his life..." but I also never thought I would almost kill someone driving to pick my husband up from work tonight...

This is an open blog post to the bicyclist who was driving the wrong way on St. Phillip Street from George to Calhoun Streets at a little before 8pm tonight.

Please, for the love of God, if you are going to disobey the posted traffic signs which clearly make St. Phillips a ONE WAY STREET, have the decency to;

a) put a light and front reflector on your BLACK bicycle.
b) wear some article of clothing that is not BLACK!
c) DON'T DRIVE AFTER DARK!

The only reason I saw this guy hurtling towards me IN THE MIDDLE of the STREET was the cigarette he had going in his hand... and the fact that I was already watching out for stupid pedestrians who like to cross in the middle of the street without looking at night...

Unfortunately, he wasn't the only stupid cyclist out tonight - after I picked up my dear hubby and related my sad tale of woe, we caught up to another bicyclist with no REAR reflector, wearing dark clothing and a dark backpack who swerved in front of the car and started cycling down the wrong side of a narrow street... all the while talking on her cell phone...

I used to read the Darwin awards and wonder how people could be so fundamentally stupid, but apparently I don't have to look far for potential candidates...

To all the cyclists out there, I am happy to share the road with you but PLEASE obey the traffic signs and signals, wear light coloured or reflective clothing at night, and have lights, bells and reflectors on your bike - it just might save your life...

YIKES! I hate it when stuff like that happens! It is funny, that that is the only good thing the cigarette is doing for him. This is a perfect example that you can't fix stupid!
That is crazy! I love your post title! I almost got hit today because I had to slam on my brakes when I saw these two people walking in the middle of a busy road because there was snow on the sidewalk! People do the stupidest things!
I guess "Smoking Kills" didn't apply today, but sadly his days are still numbered. Especially when he rides in the dark. What an idiot. And that girl on the cell phone...unbelievable.
*gasp* Oh wasn't he lucky you saw the cigarette?! On the other hand, what an idiot. You know its not a nice feeling to hit someone with a car - my mom did when I was in the car once when a kid ran out in front of her car on his bike. Scary stuff. He was ok, thankfully, but injured and out of action for a few weeks. :(

Bike safety is so important. I know since living in Europe, bikes are far more used. In my other half's native Holland, they have a very good bike lane system that helps prevent accidents since so many people cycle there. Glad it worked out ok in the end!
I lived in Portland, Oregon for about a year and that's how learned how progressive folks in SC ARE NOT. :) We don't respect pedestrians or cyclists, practically running over people in crosswalks... and pedestrians and cyclists are apparently trying to blend in with the street scape!
It is almost as annoying when someone drives while talking on a cell phone...
Wow, smoking and biking recklessly - he must think he's immortal. Thanks for visiting my blog and for your kind comment... it's nice to meet you! :)
I love the phrase "fundamentally stupid" LOL. I'm really enjoying your blog. Thanks for stopping by mine and commenting on the "sister wives" post. Someone once told me that every mom needs a wife of her own. So true, huh? LOL.
Wow. People are so dumb!
I don't know where you live, but where I live there are a ton of cyclists. I believe in sharing the road and actually drive as little as possible, but what gets me is this flagrant disregard for laws. Stop at stop signs, wait your turn, have all safety equipment. In the end, the person in the car is not the one who is going to get hurt. I just don't get it.
Visiting from SITS!

Good grief...and cyclists wonder why drives hate them so much. For EXACTLY the reaosns you mentioned above: many do not practice the slightest bit of safety at night and think they are invincible!

In regards to your Follow Friday question: I haven't done an official one like Anna mentioned above (though I think I will check it out :) but I did a couple of my own blog posts on Friday's that ust mentioned a couple of cool blogs I liked and that I thought other people might want to follow. A sample post here: http://rogoclan.blogspot.com/2009/12/follow-frida... You could do that as well :)
Eek, that's crazy.
I hate it when people don't use their common sense. My brother once totaled his car and was injured (after flipping it 8 times that he can remember) because of some drunk walking down the middle of the road.
I completely agree to this and I have experienced this myself. If they could only spare our souls :)
That guy is so lucky! There are just so many stupid people out there!

Thanks for stopping by my blog the other day. I've been sick this week so I'm a bit behind on returning the favor! I love your blog!
